Arkham Origins Will Have Multiplayer

Whether you think it needs it or not.

It’s tough to think of a game that has more stigma surrounding it than Arkham Origins right now. First it was announced that beloved developer Rocksteady, who hit it out of the park with the first two Arkham games, would be moving on to new opportunities. So who will soldier on to give us the Batman game that we need but not the one we deserve? Warner Bros Montreal, a division that up until this point can only list the Arkham City Wii U port on its list of achievements. That’s not to say anyone has written off the game entirely, but it does make one perhaps a bit more wary.

Next we are reminded that Mark Hamill retired his Joker back with Arkham City as they book the admittedly incredibly talented Troy Baker as the Joker.

Then people damn near lost their minds when they found out Kevin Conroy was being replaced as Batman. But then Kevin Conroy went to twitter and announced he’d done voice-over work for the game, leading to nobody knowing what to believe anymore.

Now today it’s been announced that the game will feature multiplayer. Does the Batman series need multiplayer? Not really. At best it needed it about as badly as the Dead Space, Tomb Raider, and Mass Effect series’. It’s a curious move, but admittedly the trailer does look like it has an interesting dynamic to it. The mode will pit two teams of three against one another but will also throw in Batman and Robin into the fray. It’s an interesting dynamic to a mode many will consider superfluous. You can watch the trailer and see for yourself if it looks like it was worth the effort.

And because Wii U owners haven’t been crapped on enough this year, the feature will only be making its way to Sony and Microsoft platforms including the PC. WB Interactive confirmed this to IGN this morning, saying:

“The team is focusing development efforts on platforms with the largest multiplayer audience,”

Ouch, sorry guys.
