A few days ago, a new Kickstarter was launched by Megaman grandaddy himself Keiji Inafune. Titled Mighty No. 9, the pitch is you’ll play as Beck – the ninth robot in a line of 8 super powered automatons and the only one not infected with a computer virus making all other mechanical creations go berserk. You’ll run around 2D sidescrolling levels running, jumping and blasting your way through enemies in a way that recalls “the best aspects of the 8-bit an 16-bit eras.”
This all sounds vaguely familiar.
In four days the game has already exceeded its initial goal of $900,000, with stretch goals promising more levels and applications that run on Mac and Linux. If nothing else, it’s nice to see Keiji free of Capcom jerking his baby around after essentially pulling the plug on the Megaman franchise and practically ignoring the 25th anniversary of the series.
