If you explored the bounty of games to come out of 7DFPS last month you might have already encountered SUPERHOT. The game is essentially Blue Brick Software’s response to the challenge to make a functional FPS in seven days. A lot of cool titles came out of the competition but this game stands out as one of the more creative entries.
The concept behind the game is simple. Time moves at less than a snail’s pace until your character begins to move at which point everything speeds up to real time. This unique hook makes the game feel almost as much like a puzzle title as it does an action one. Room littered with enemies? Stop moving, survey the scene, see where they’re all standing, see if there’s any bullets mid air heading your way. Once you’ve formulated your plan of attack you can start firing bullets and dodging the ones being sent back your way. It’s a nice original spin on the much overused bullet time concept that plagues shooters nowadays.
At this point the game does feel more like a full fledged tech demo than a real title but the whole thing runs in your browser via Unity so really there’s no harm in giving it a try right?
