In the first single player DLC announced for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, you’ll be playing as the first mate of Black Flag’s pirate Assassin Edward Conway, and former slave, Adewale.

The DLC named “Freedom Cry” is penned by Jill Murray, who also had a hand in crafting the story of Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation, a game which had you play as an assassin of French and African descent named Aveline in early 1800’s New Orleans and is available on the PSVita. Freedom Cry is promoted as a single player campaign with its own storyline, documenting events 15 years after the core game,  simultaneously making it something of a prequel to Liberation. Murray has promised Adewale is very much his own assassin, and that the concept of “Everything is permitted” takes on new meaning when you’re a former slave (pointing out that prior protagonist Aveline was born into privilege and only “opted” to take part in slave rebellions).

The game is part of Black Flag’s Season Pass, which also includes more ways to customize Edward’s ship, additional single player missions and new multiplayer characters. Though it’s likely Freedom Cry will get its own separate release, no word on a price, while the season pass will see you adding $20 to Black Flag’s current price tag.

Looking at the trailer, I’m always surprised by the new and impressive ways these Assassin’s take people out. The idea of playing as a pirate assassin, then an escaped slave assassin, are extremely intriguing. Black Flag will be out in North America for current gen platforms on October 29th.
