Today’s Nintendo Direct revealed the usual details about upcoming games but also gave us some insight into the future of the 3DS’ online components. Users can expect a system update in December that will bring Nintendo Network IDs as well as the Miiverse to the handheld.
If you haven’t picked up a Wii U yet you might not have much experience with these two services. The Nintendo Network ID is basically akin to Gamertags or PSN IDs on other platforms. The big benefit to having this service moved over to the 3DS is that now any credits you’ve got stored on the eShop for either system will be synced over to the other one.
Once you’re rocking your new Nintendo ID you’re also now going to be able to connect to the Miiverse. Again to those not familiar the Miiverse is basically like a very lightweight message board where people can post notes or hand-drawn pictures for the general public to see. This is of course announced only two weeks after Nintendo decommissioned the 3DS’ popular dick-drawing service. Be advised dick-drawers, the Miiverse is very heavily moderated. I’ve been using the system for awhile now and have only seen offensive content for mere seconds before it vanished into thin air.
There isn’t any official date for the service’s launch aside from “system update in December”, but you can keep your eyes on this page for more information: http://www.nintendo.com/3ds/nnid
