Nintendo Direct for December 18th - Enemy Slime

Nintendo Direct for December 18th

A little bit of Mario, a little bit of Zelda, some Smash Bros., and all is well.

3DS

We may have just recently wrapped up the Enemy Slime Podcast for the year but we’re still here in the flesh, and we caught some interesting Nintendo tidbits today we thought you might be interested in as regurgitated to us by Nintendo Direct.

Rosalina Everywhere

Rosalina from the Mario Galaxy series will be appearing in Super Smash Bros. with Luma tagging along. This looks like there could be a unique combat mechanic resulting from the pair up; maybe something similar to the way the Ice Climbers work? This expands the female roster in a way that might actually be pretty cool, unlike the last addition we got. Yes, I’m the only one on staff who thinks the Wii Fit Trainer is going to be a boring character, sue me!

That said, it looks like Rosalina is very quickly being accepted as a pretty major character to the Mario universe despite what everyone initially thought playing the Galaxy series; alongside her Smash Bros. debut, she’ll even be making an appearance in Mario Kart 8 for Wii U as a playable driver. If you like playing as a baby for some reason, Baby Mario and Luigi are also confirmed for the Mario Kart 8 roster. It would also seem that the vehicle selection is getting doubled from the last big Mario Kart game as you’ll now be able to ride in ATVs and… UFOs? Hopefully adding so many new vehicle types won’t make the balance sloppy, but Mario Kart Wii was pretty tight with the bikes and karts so we’ll see.

There were a few other interesting notes in Nintendo’s grab bag of news such as Dr. Luigi, which apparently is such a heinous (or brilliant) idea that Nintendo’s own press link for the game leads to the base Nintendo site, and searching for Dr. Luigi on their own site comes up with no results. That’s fine, I’m not sure if I trust Luigi with my life anyways.

A Not Really Zelda Game

As a bit of a… surprise… we might well be getting another Zelda game before the next real Zelda in 2014, though it seems to merely be an iteration of the Warriors series, which I’ve never even heard of and appears to be a bit of a beat ’em up. At least, that’s what I get out of seeing Link standing in front of a flat field packed shoulder to shoulder with beasties.

That said, it’s being worked on by the Zelda team proper and the art style certainly looks lovely, so I’m not gonna knock it.
