No Man’s Sky Announcement - Enemy Slime

No Man’s Sky Announcement

A potentially exciting space exploration game, still in development.

News

The talk of the town as of late appears to be No Man’s Sky, a quite ambitious endeavor by indie developer Hello Games. Touted as a “massive, procedurally generated, sci-fi exploration sim” or in layman’s terms, a space exploration game that creates content as you go, it certainly all looks and sounds impressive. The trailer we’ve been given (below) takes us from an ocean, to the planet’s deciduous forest, a star ship, the atmosphere and space all in real time, interspersed with space battles, faster than light warps and some kind of giant desert snake thing.

Sean Murray of Hello Games appeared on Spike’s VGX to discuss the title, still in development. Murray informs us that anything your character sees, be it a mountain or another planet, can be reached and explored, stating “when you see stars those are suns, with their own planets around them.” While one always has to raise an eyebrow on a game that sounds so massive, you can get a sense of Sean Murray’s love of sci-fi, excitement and ambition towards the project saying “We wanted to make a game about exploration and something that was real.”

No Man’s Sky has a team consisting of a whole four people, and the studio is known previously for their Joe Danger titles, a series of side scrolling stunt racing games.

There’s a lot to look at and be awestruck by from the trailer alone, and even my cold heart was filled with giddy feelings of when I popped in Mass Effect or PSO for the first time and felt the epicness of space. It’ll be interesting to see how this develops, in the mean time you can watch the trailer and the announcement interview in the links below.

And if you can suffer Joel McHale’s lethargic commentary, catch Sean Murray’s original interview from VGX:
