SUPERHOT Kickstarter - Enemy Slime

SUPERHOT Kickstarter

Give it a shot. No pun intended.

It’s always difficult figuring out which crowdfunding projects to talk about and which to muse a bit while moving on. On the one hand there’s a wealth of talent out there, all of them trying to get their projects off the ground and provide exciting new ideas. On the other hand there are projects out there that either face unforseen production challenges, or prove to be an unfortunate scam on an individual who doesn’t mind preying on the kindness of strangers.

However what’s always nice is when you can see a game with a proof of concept as strong as SUPERHOT. Started as a game jam project, the developers came up with SUPERHOT in seven days. Jared covered it back in September. The game is a first person shooter with the pitch that time only moves when you move, however it should be noted time also moves, albeit slowly, after you’ve fired a round from your gun. It’s got a simple aesthetic that works very well for the game, red enemies in an all white environment. My best description of the game is “Portal meets John Woo”, as problem solving skills will come in more handy in (awesomely) clearing a room than blindly shooting.

It’s no wonder then that after the 7 Day First Person Shooter Jam that took place last August the team would want to go on to polish up their prototype. The same SUPERHOT prototype would also go on to win the Developer’s Award at Poland’s WGK Conference. The team would go on to release this demo to the unsuspecting public, where it garnered quick popularity.

So in short: The team seems to know what they’re doing, and are presenting a reasonably different and fun game. You shouldn’t take my word for it though, as you can play the public build for yourself right here: http://superhotgame.com/play-prototype

With their lofty kickstarter goal of 100k, which they seem well on their way to getting seeing as how the kickstarter just opened and they’re already at 40k (and rising as I write this article), they plan to rework the art and animation, add new mechanics and puzzles, fix existing problems with the game, and add some classic scenarios you may be familiar with high concept action movie plots.

Now again this does come with a light warning that any project will see its hiccups, not to jinx the SUPERHOT team as they seem quite capable. So let’s keep our fingers crossed that the project manages to bare fruit. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this project, as it’s an overall solid idea with a strong example of what both the team and game are capable of.
