Hotline Miami Swaps Engines In New Patch

Developers drop GameMaker in the PC version for something better.

News

When Hotline Miami was ported to console, it also was plunked down into a new engine offering a little more polish than the GameMaker engine, which while good for hobby game authoring isn’t ideal for games that go as big as Hotline has.

Why mention this now? Just this morning, the PC version of Hotline Miami was upgraded with the new engine that was present in the console version, Sony’s own PhyreEngine (which appears compatible with PC). It finally allows resolution selection and a few other little things, like a launcher and the ability to lock on to enemies. You can still select the original GameMaker version from the launcher if you like.

Though it doesn’t affect the look of the game beyond being able to change the resolution, it hasn’t hurt the performance any. It’s the same if not a little smoother than before. And don’t worry, the new engine still reads your old saves just fine, I can verify.

This is undoubtedly a gesture of good will by Hotline Miami’s developer as we roll ever closer to Hotline Miami 2, and it’s a welcome one indeed. We’ll try to keep everyone up to date on any further big changes in Hotline Miami and of course any information on Hotline Miami 2 as it becomes available.
