Hey intrepid Xbox One owner, I see you there, looking all sad now that you’ve beaten your one exclusive (almost) game for the first half of the year. Well don’t be so dour, Microsoft sees that you need something to do with that Xbox Live Gold membership and they’re about to give it to you in the form of allowing you to change your Gamertag.
Starting this Wednesday Microsoft will begin releasing just under a million unused Gamertags, which will become available to any Xbox Live Gold customer with at least a year of tenure on the service.
The tags all come from the long long ago of 2011 and consists of users that never made the transition from the original Xbox to the 360. Although Microsoft won’t release the full list of tags they are assuring us that many of the tags will fall into the following categories:
- Proper Names
- Pop culture references (Entertainment, sports, gaming)
- Types of Food
- Geography and Travel
- Science and Technology
- Math and Numbers
- Animals
- Some of the greatest inventions of all time
So better start thinking of the “proper name” or “greatest invention of all time” that you’d like to use to identify yourself on the service. When the time comes you can go find the tag of your dreams here.
