FTL Faster Than Light was one of Kickstarter’s early success stories, earning over 20 times its originally proposed budget. The result was a randomly generated rouge-like with a reputation for being extremely challenging even on easy difficulty levels. Not happy with resting on their laurels, Subset Games announced last year that it would be releasing an Advanced Edition for free to all of those who currently own the game. On Feburary 19th, they announced what would be included in this update.
The changes include the following new sub systems
- Clone Bays: A replacement for medical bays that will make a new copy of a crew member if they should perish… as long as its on and functional.
- Hacking: New functionality for drones that allows hacking of enemy’s subsystems.
- Mind Control: This temporarily allows you to turn enemies into allies.
- A Backup Battery: This will help during those battles when you need some extra juice to make sure everything stays on.
The update will also include a new race, graphical improvements, new ships, small gameplay tweaks, new drones, new areas, new weapons, new events, and the inclusion of a new hard mode. For a game with a reputation for punishing difficulty, it will be interesting to see just how hard the new mode is.
All of these changes will greatly affect how the game is played, and for the purists who would prefer to play the game as they originally purchased it, they will be able to turn off the new features before starting a new game.
FTL Advanced Edition will be coming out for free to those who own the original on PC, MAC, and Linux eary this year. An Ipad version is also in the works, and expected to release within the same time-frame.
