Earlier this month, Square-Enix announced that due to the success of Bravely Default it would be going back to focusing on producing great JRPG’s. This move towards what made Squaresoft and Enix some of the most respected developers of the late 90’s and early 00’s has widely been regarded as no brainier for a company that has recently struggled with losses, and the dwindling popularity of their first party titles as they try to blend their RPG’s with action.
It was reported today that Square-Enix has closed its Indian mobile game development operation. All six employees of this outfit have been laid off. This studio was established a little over a year, and it closed its doors without having released a title. Reports also confirm that several projects have been cancelled in Square’s studios in Mexico.
This closure does not mean that Square-Enix is pulling out of the mobile market entirely. They still have in house developers that can churn out mobile titles. It does, however, seem like Square-Enix is looking to scale back operations, which is consistent with the new direction they announced, and with a company that exhibited such lackluster performance this past year.
