Looks like Suikoden 2 got an ESRB rating this morning giving it a Playstation 3 listing. You may ask yourself why is this important? Well if you remember Lucio’s article on Persona 4 such actions usually preempt an older title coming to the Playstation Network.
Suikoden 2 is essentially the story of three childhood friends, the Protagonist (referred to as Riou by some sources), his sister Nanami and their buddy Jowy as they get swept up in a war between several free City-States and the kingdom of Highland. The game sees the Protagonist recruit several dozen party members, create an army and building up his own castle and town, as well as treating the player to minigames such as farming and an Iron Chef-esque cook off competition. Not to mention swinging around the magical power of runes, which can only be described as a thermonuclear device installed in a character’s hand.
While Suikoden 2 had many followups, and the original Suikoden is already available on the PSN, Suikoden 2 is generally regarded as the “best” in the series (if not one of the best JRPGs ever made). If this ESRB announcement is indeed a precursor to the title coming to the Playstation Network it will be a treat for a new generation of gamers to play, or older gamers to relive some nostalgia, without requiring them to pay some absurd price on Amazon or eBay.
I know while I’ve kept my copy in relatively good condition I’d still be looking forward to downloading it and commanding the Orange Army one more time without wearing down my disc, so let’s keep our fingers crossed. Keep your eyes on Enemy Slime for more details on Suikoden 2.
