Nintendo kicked off their digital event with the assistance of Robot Chicken. Reggie Fils-Aime appears in action figure form to cater to an unruly crowd desperate for Starfoxes and Metroids? Did people get what they want? Maybe..
We start things off with a relatively innocuous announcement, Mii characters will be playable in the upcoming Smash Bros. When you set up your Mii for battle you’ll be able to choose from one of three classes, the Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, or Mii Gunners. Each character’s name does an adequate enough job explaining what exactly they do. You’ll also be able to choose your Mii’s special move set.
During the Smash Bros demonstration Nintendo also showed off their new technology called ‘Amiibos’. These figurines are similar to what you’ve seen from Skylanders and Disney Infinity. They interface with the NFC chip in the Wii U gamepad and can both push and pull data.
After that Nintendo revealed the upcoming Yoshi game. Yoshi’s Woolly World features a graphical style similar to that of Kirby’s Epic Yarn along with gameplay that looks very reminiscent of Yoshi’s Story on the Nintendo 64.
If you were a fan of the very unique ‘Captain Toad levels’ in Super Mario 3D World then you are in luck. The concept is being spun off into a full sized game called Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. That game will land this holiday.
But let’s be real, you don’t really care about any of this. You want to know where the hell Zelda is. The latest entry in the series was announced during the presentation. It promises a more open world than ever before and shows off a newly designed Link getting into a tussle with some monsters. Nintendo hasn’t put the footage up on YouTube yet but we’ll put it here once they do.
Next we had a number of smaller reveals and releases. Bayonetta 2 showed another trailer and revealed that the original Bayonetta will also be included in the package.
Hyrule Warriors got to show off some new footage but didn’t really have any huge reveals attached to it.
Monolith Soft’s frequently shown off untitled RPG X finally got itself a title. If you were suspecting that the game would fit into the Xenoblade universe you were correct. The game will be titled Xenoblade Chronicles X.
The presentation took what seemed like a very long time to talk about a new IP, Splatoon. In Splatoon you control a character who is half human half squid. You’re assigned to a team and tasked with using a gun full of paint to splatter more of your color all over an arena than your opponents.
There’s plenty more to see and Nintendo is going to continue broadcasting information all through the show. You can follow their coverage here.
