LucasArts Classics Head To GOG

6 titles launch on the service, with the promise of more to come.

GOG is really doing god’s work. If you’ve never purchased a retro game from the company let me explain what makes them so special. The company takes old games that struggle to run on modern PCs and either patches them or bundles them with emulation software so that the end user gets to just click the game and watch it work on their futuristic computer. Want to play Ultima 7? No problem, they’ll sell you a DRM free version auto configured with DOSBox for a reasonable price.

Now the Poland based company has truly hit the motherload and locked in the rights to republish a selection of old LucasArts games.

As of today the following games have launched on the service with more to come in the future:

  • X-Wing
  • Tie Fighter
  • Sam & Max Hit The Road
  • The Secret Of Monkey Island
  • Indiana Jones & The Fate Of Atlantis
  • Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

These are some of the best games LucasArts ever published and almost none of them have ever been available digitally. Each game is priced at or below $9.99 so if you’ve never played one now’s your chance.

X-Wing and Tie Fighter are both great games, but they really need a joystick to be experienced properly. For me the real gem in this first set of releases is Sam & Max Hit The Road. I would be more than willing to debate anyone who wants to try and claim it’s not the best title LucasArts ever released.
