Hopefully we are just about done talking about the colossal mess that was Assassin’s Creed Unity. As you may recall the game was a technical nightmare upon release with numerous glitches and performance issues plaguing every major platform. The game released two patches during the time it took us to formulate a review and we still had to factor its sorry technical state in when coming up with a score.
Today the CEO of Ubisoft Montreal, Yannis Mallat has taken to Ubisoft’s blog to apologize for the sorry display Unity gave upon launch.
I want to sincerely apologize on behalf of Ubisoft and the entire Assassin’s Creed team. These problems took away from your enjoyment of the game, and kept many of you from experiencing the game at its fullest potential.
But words only mean so much, what is Yannis willing to do to make sure you feel square? Well Ubisoft has decided to offer penance in the form of free DLC. If you purchased Unity at all then the previously announced Dead Kings campaign expansion is now going to be provided to you free of charge.
If you purchased a season pass for the game’s DLC then you’ll receive that content (IE Dead Kings) as expected but will also be gifted another Ubisoft title of your choice. The company is reportedly still working out the exact process to get these games out to people but we do know that you’ll be able to choose from the following titles:
- The Crew
- Far Cry 4
- Watch Dogs
- Assassin’s Creed Black Flag
- Rayman Legends
- Just Dance 2015
Now you might be thinking, “well I’ll just buy the season pass and get Far Cry 4 for 29 dollars.” Not so fast there hoss, the season pass has now been removed from all marketplaces.
Meanwhile Unity’s third patch is rolling out onto all platforms this week and describing the list of fixes as substantial is an understatement. There’s over 300 fixes listed including a couple frame rate related tweaks, specifically it sounds like they believe they’ve cleaned up the PS4 version a bit by changing the priority level for online services. There are other specific frame rate issues being targeted in Patch 3 but Ubisoft has also mentioned that they’ve planned a fourth patch that will address overall performance issues. Personally I don’t think this is something they’ll ever be able to fix 100% but I guess we’ll see.
