This year’s Video Game Awards have come and gone and they went pretty much exactly how you would expect. At the very least the whole production was better than the incredibly awkward display that we got last year. There were even some moments that were, dare I say it, “great”?
But as usual, the highlight in the awards show came in the form of some pretty great previews and premieres for upcoming games and so in the spirit of skipping the awards for the juiciest bits, here are all of the games that were revealed at the show. Let’s get Nintendo out of the way first and start with their biggest news:
The Legend of Zelda
Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma arrive to show off our first look at the upcoming Zelda title in action. The game boasts an enormous world map, one that’s likely bigger than anything the Zelda series has given us before. Before wrapping up the two share a brief tease on the new Star Fox title, but alas it sounds like there’s still not something to show there yet.
Mario Maker
Miyamoto returns to show off the upcoming Mario Maker. I’ve always been lukewarm to the game but every time I see footage of it I can’t help but get a little excited. There’s obviously a lot of room for creativity with this platform and it’ll definitely be interesting to see once the general public gets their hands on it.
Metal Gear Online
Hideo Kojima and his new buddy Kiefer Sutherland rolled in to introduce the world to the new Metal Gear Online which will serve as the multiplayer mode in The Phantom Pain. This one is more trailer than actual gameplay, but if you’re a Metal Gear fan there’s probably enough here to get you excited.
Tacoma
Fullbright is finally ready to reveal their followup to last year’s wildly successful Gone Home. Tacoma’s trailer doesn’t reveal much. You might be inclined to assume it’s Gone Home in space but even if that’s all it was would that be such a bad thing?
Bloodborne
Sony went ahead and shared some new gameplay footage of Bloodborne. This is the same footage they showed again at the Playstation Experience event earlier today so if you’re crawling around the internet looking for more you can keep looking. The game still looks very much like a gothic themed Dark Souls which I maintain isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I believe this trailer also gives us our first look at the game’s co-op in action. You’ll notice it to seems very reminiscent of Dark Souls.
No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky showed off its procedurally generated universe in a brief little two and a half minute video. I’m still not super sure what you’ll be spending the bulk of the game doing here. Just exploring I guess. I’m still very much on the fence with this one but I can also see how it might tickle others in just the right way.
Godzilla
Oh, okay, I guess we’re getting a Godzilla game. Let’s hope Namco Bandai just steals all the good bits from Rampage.
The Witcher 3
Another brief little nugget from The Witcher which is still looking as nice as usual. This trailer doesn’t give us anything new by way of gameplay, instead focusing on the Wild Hunt (which is less an event and more a group of scary skeletons) and their quest for that sweet sweet Elder Blood.
Human Element
Indie studio Robotoki got to show off their first title which will be an online multiplayer game for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The game is set within a zombie apocalypse with the hook being that it will focus primarily on the poor behavior of survivors rather than their undead opponents.
King’s Quest
Sierra’s popular adventure game series is poised to make a return and it’s looking like a promising return to the series’ point and click routes. It’s important to note that even if this game turns out to be awful it will at least ensure that the final game in the King’s Quest series isn’t 1998’s Mask of Eternity.
Until Dawn
Until Dawn’s trailer tells the exciting story of a woman (played by Heroes alum Hayden Panettiere) and her towel as they try to escape the grasp of a masked murderer. At least we presume he’s going to murder her, maybe he just wants to clip her nails and keep the trimmings in a jar in his fridge. You guys gotta stop assuming the worst about people.
Before
Before comes to you from Facepunch studios, aka the company that made (or rather is making) Rust. The game takes place in a prehistoric setting and puts you in control of a tribe trying to survive in the harsh and unforgiving environment. You’ll deal with standard tribe activities like hunting and finding shelter. There’s also a volcano in the trailer. Maybe if you’re very good you’ll get to throw someone into it.
Adr1ft
Adr1ft’s trailer follows an astronaut who is having a less than stellar day. Some kind of unknown cataclysm has befallen your space station and the trailer sees our astronaut friend trying their very hardest to find some oxygen so they can simply not die. Basically it looks like Gravity, the game, which might actually be a really good thing especially after you notice the little Oculus logo in the trailer’s title card.
The Order 1886
Here’s one minute of The Order. It’s still absolutely spectacular to look at. There’s no real gameplay featured in the trailer but it doesn’t really matter because the game looks identical in action.
