Evolve Wants More Money

A bold new strategy, paying extra to get a complete game.

News

Just when WB had taken the mantle of “company most concerned with hoarding bucks” after toppling Ubisoft, EA and SquareEnix, software publisher 2K reminds us they’re still in the game. Evolve has a new season pass coming for their non-game. In what should have been exciting news, Turtle Rock announced they were releasing four new hunters and one new monster, then went ahead and let everyone know these additional characters meant to give longevity to a very limited experience are going to be behind loads and loads of paywalls.

Among the new hunters are an assault class merc named Lennox who brings two firsts to the franchise, the first female Assault and the first melee brawler. With both the elements of lightning and bullets at her finger tips, her power suit sounds as though it could easily kick monster hide.

Shame about the whole pay wall thing.

Remember, as of this writing Evolve carries a $60 price tag, and the current season pass costs $25. When most season passes clock in at $10 – $15, Evolve had the heftiest price tag for a pass paired with a middling amount of content. You really didn’t get a lot for it. A “second” season pass off one game is also nearly unheard of. While the price point for the new season pass hasn’t been announced I don’t have any faith that it will come cheap, and the content associated with it is slated to be released across the course of a full term pregnancy. That’s right, you could be a new proud parent in the time it takes for Turtle Rock to mete out all the season pass “goodies.”

You will be able to buy Lennox in a few days however, and naturally she’s going to warrant you putting cash down for content that doesn’t even exist yet right? Right?

Evolve met criticism with its original pricing points, with many claiming the game should have been a cheaper experience, especially if they were going to charge so much for DLC. 2k And Turtle Rock later tried to assure people Evolve and its content was worth at least $130 worth of content. I’ve played Evolve. No. It isn’t. Evolve also quickly dropped off Steam’s most played charts, with the game going on sale left and right, so believing Evolve will have any kind of player base in nine months still willing to shell out cash is well… Optimistic.
