Is It Finally Safe To Buy Mortal Kombat X?

How many hundreds of dollars is Mortal Kombat worth to you?

News

When I originally published our 2/5 review for Mortal Kombat X it drew some ire from folks who couldn’t understand why we’d give a really solid game such a low score. Why the low score? Well it all relates to value. At the time we already knew about the game’s first planned content pack and the fact that folks who didn’t pre-order would already be missing one playable character in the form of Goro. That meant that upon release in order to secure all of Mortal Kombat’s content you’d have to drop sixty dollars for the main game, thirty for the first DLC pack, and then another five for Goro putting you just under the one hundred dollar mark.

Of course now this week WB has revealed a second thirty dollar “Kombat Pack” as well as the inevitable Mortal Kombat XL edition which contains all the downloadable content up until this point. The XL edition currently has a stub page up on Amazon for pre-orders and is priced at the full $59.99.

If you’re keeping score, that means early adopters of the game will have paid $125.00 for the game in total. In fact, if you never purchased any downloadable characters you would actually save five dollars by just throwing your old game in the trash and buying the XL edition.

Oh but PC users don’t get your hopes up. I don’t know why you would have any hopes after Mortal Kombat X’s notoriously awful PC port to begin with, but NetherRealm has also announced that they have no plans to bring the second Kombat Pack or the XL edition to the PC. That might seem like a bad thing but it’s probably a noble endeavor on their part, protecting you from their own shoddy port work.

So the question remains, is it safe to buy MKX yet? Probably? Although if you wait a few months that XL edition is probably going to plummet in price. Anyway, just had to drop in and say “told you so”.
