During our last podcast we made wild, but maybe also totally accurate E3 predictions. It seems Jared’s wish for a new Red Dead Redemption might be coming true after all, as Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick commented on Thursday. Zelnick mentioned that they will be more selective on which titles become permanent franchises in the future, as not all games have the potential to become franchises.
On the list of franchises to become permanent franchises are Borderlands, NBA, and Grand Theft Auto. Special emphasis was placed on Red Dead Redemption, leading to conjectures that we might see a new installment of the western franchise soon. Zelnick also emphasized a focus on quality rather than annual installments.
Another interesting development is the announcement that 2K Marin studio will be the new home of the Bioshock series. 2K Marin is perhaps most famous for developing Bioshock 2, but it is still surprising they were mentioned as the studio was supposedly closed last Ocotber. This caused puzzled reactions from former staffers at 2k Marin.
Zelnick went to express that he had high hopes for Bioshock as a franchise that had not reached its potential. After the closure of Irrational Studios earlier this year, the future of the franchise was uncertain, but Ken Levine is still with Take-Two, and as far as “fuck you’s” go, taking your franchise and giving it to someone else so they can do it “right” is pretty high up there.
